Preliminary Market and Technical Research

On this page, information and various aircraft with specifications meeting or similar to the outline are presented and discussed.

Similar Aircraft

The criteria outlined in the previous pages come close to the Air Taxi criteria that already existed in Canada. This specification can be found under Standard 723 - Air Taxi: Aeroplanes - CAR. These specifications, however, specify a higher maximum number of 9 passengers compared to the 4 passengers described in the outline.  Although bigger in passenger capacity, the idea is very similar to our project; which is to transport people from one point to another point at a short distance. In the most recent news, an air taxi operation was launched in India that utilizes a Tecnam P2006T which is a light aircraft with a 2+2 configuration and a large cargo area on the rear[1]. As seen in Figure 1, the aircraft utilizes two small engines and is relatively compact compared to what other companies manufacture for this category. This aircraft has a range of roughly 1,240 km which makes it superior for longer travels compared to the concepts we are working on[2]. Other aircraft that fit this category include DHC-6 Twin Otter which falls to a much larger aircraft compared to the current requirement. Another aircraft that is often used as an air taxi is also the Cessna 402 which can seat between 4 to 10 seats. A smaller example that we can look at would be the classic and trusty DHC Beaver or a Cessna Stationair which fits the exact cargo and passenger requirements.

At this capacity, the market is primarily dominated by helicopters. Helicopters are also ideal for the air taxi, tourism, and charter industry due to their vertical take-off capability. However, they are also expensive to maintain and operate.

Unique Crafts and Additional Research

This section is dedicated to various aircraft that explore unique systems and concepts. This section contained aircraft that I found to be unique and inspired various designs and aspects of my concepts.

x6gqobopcxn21 (1).jpg

Vanguard 2C Omniplane

This aircraft utilizes two large rotors incorporated into the uniquely shaped wing. Very little information is available regarding this aircraft. However, sources stated that the aircraft was first designed in 1952 and it was initially produced by Vanguard Air and Marine Corporation for a possible personal executive VTOL aircraft with 2 people capacity[1]. The aircraft was initially powered by a single six-cylinder Lycoming O-540-A1A. But it may have been underpowered for the aircraft as it was later upgraded with an 860 hp Lycoming YT53-L-1 turboshaft engine for its test flight. Research on this aircraft was discontinued and led to another aircraft designated 2D. No other statistics such as cruise speed, service ceiling, range, or stall speed were found for this aircraft. However, this aircraft was flown and tested. The key feature that may be applicable to the concept design is the lift fan located on each wing and how they are configured.

AW609-hero-banner_finale (1).jpg

AgustaWestland AW609

The AW609 is currently the only civilian tiltrotor aircraft in production. This aircraft utilizes a traditional fuselage and T-tail configuration. The tilt-rotor system allows the aircraft to take off vertically and act as a fixed-wing for cruising. This aircraft is designed to overcome the helicopter's downside; slower speed, limited range, and high fuel burn during the cruise. This aircraft has 18,000lbs MTOW and over 6,000lbs useful load while utilizing 2 Pratt&Whitney PT6C-67A [27].

PBS Turbojets

Various engines were available from PBS. Smallest of the series commonly power UAVS and RC aircraft. However, they also produce medium and larger mini turbojets that later power various different experimental aircraft. Most notably, the TWERP experimental aircraft which utilizes the Burt Ruttan Quickie Q1airframe is equipped with two PBS TJ40 which has 88lbs of thrust each[28][29].
